Fooling People With Fake Security Cameras

A fake security camera or a dummy security camera is a sophisticated imitation of a real security camera, and is used to fool intruders, or even the general watchers, into thinking that their actions are being monitored.

Fake dummy security cameras are low-cost systems that act as a deterrent security system rather than a preventive one. They can be used indoors or outdoors, depending on their specifications, and they are quite helpful in deterring crime and vandalism. It is needless to say that these fake security camera systems are non-functional and cheaper than the real thing. They are generally used along with real cameras to bring the overall camera costs down.

There are places - such as prisons or banks - where the usage of such cameras can be counterproductive. However, in subways or at crowded transport stations, their use, when combined with the use of real cameras, is very beneficial. Some employers use them at workplaces to give their employees the feeling that they are being watched.

Types of fake camera security systems

Some of these security cameras fake are fitted with motion sensors that make them rotate and pan, depending on human movement, and such a rotation or a pan imparts the feeling to an observer that these systems are real, and mean business.

Some of the cameras fake security have flashing lights, some of them tilt, or pan - but the purpose remains the same, i.e., to give the user the impression that they are the real thing.

Factors to consider before buying a dummy security camera

Before you go in for a camera dummy fake security system, you have to ask: Does your business really need a dummy camera? Now, consider the following factors:
  • You might be running a small niche business and you would already have established an excellent rapport with your clients. Installing a dummy camera in such a business will be a bad idea, as it will put off the customers, who are more like your friends.
  • If you run a shop that has a lot of walk-ins, then you need proper protection for your inventory and a fake camera security system will be ineffective, and invariably you will come across inventory theft. And, once the thieves are not caught because you did not record anything, they will be emboldened to come back for more.
  • If you are dealing in valuable inventory and want to keep an eye on your employees who handle the inventory, then a dummy security camera will be a bad idea.
  • If you want the fake cameras to mingle with the real ones, then a fake camera system might be a good option. Your costs will reduce and the deterrent factor will increase
The factors to consider vary with the type of business you are in. So, keep in mind specific factors that affect your business, rather than general factors, before installing a fake camera security system.

Positives and negatives of a fake camera security system

The main advantage of a dummy camera security is that it is very useful in acting as a deterrent. The second advantage is that they are cheaper than the real camera security systems and hence don't mess up your budgets.

On paper, the advantages may appear miniscule, but the “deterrent” factor they bring into security cannot be underestimated.

Of course, there are disadvantages too. Here are some of them:

  • Many Internet shops sell these cameras cheap, and the cheap stuff is a poor imitation of the real thing. Tacky, plastic, and most often “Made in China”, these imitations don't fool anyone.
  • A trained and sophisticated thief can normally figure out a fake camera just by looking at it. By looking at it, he will first check the motion - whether it is random or guided motion. If it is random this is most likely a fake camera. Then he will look for the cabling. Most real cameras have two cables: one goes to the power source and the other to the video. If a thief cannot see two cables or if he sees cables ending abruptly without going anywhere, he will know it is a fake.
  • Most dummy cameras work on batteries as they try to save you power. Now, since they move, blink, and swivel regularly, the battery wears out rapidly and you have to keep changing it discreetly, because if you do it often in full view of the public or employees, they will figure out it is a fake.
  • The more realistic a dummy camera looks, the better it is for business. But when these dummy cameras look almost like the real ones, it costs a lot to make them, rendering the price differential negligible.
Whatever the disadvantages may be, correct usage of a dummy camera can boost security and can prove to be a worthy investment. So why not go in for camera dummy security today?
