Counterfeit Detectors To Curb Counterfeiting

Counterfeit money detectors are machines that detect if a currency note - or in some cases, a coin (counterfeit coin detectors) - is genuine or counterfeit.

Small businesses are more likely to receive counterfeit currency because counterfeiters know that people running small businesses, especially shops, are either not trained or are inadequately trained to spot counterfeit currency. Coupled with this is the availability of inexpensive high-quality scanners and color printers, which can produce currency clones that are difficult to distinguish from the original. These factors encourage the counterfeiters and put small businesses at risk.

Counterfeit currency can prove costly for a business because you just cannot get redeemed for it. Not just that, if you deposit counterfeit currency in your bank account, you are liable to be caught and handed over to the authorities for no fault committed.

So, it is essential for businesses that receive cash payments on a regular basis - for example, restaurants, bookshops, and currency exchangers - to install a counterfeit bill detector.

What to do if you have received counterfeit currency

In case you have been paid currency that apparently looks counterfeit, here's what you need to do:
  • Do not give it back to the person who has given it to you nor enter into any argument with him.
  • Try to detain this person as long as you can on some pretext or the other.
  • Make a quick note of his description and note down the number of his vehicle, if possible.
  • Try to contact your local police as soon as you can without arousing the culprit's suspicion.
  • Store the note carefully by placing it in an envelope.
  • Hand it over to the police department and give them all the information you have.

Different kinds of counterfeit bill detectors and their pros and cons

Different types of counterfeit bill detectors are available in the market. They come in various forms, e.g., as flat tabletop units or in the shape of a pen (counterfeit detector pens). They are based on different technologies, each with their own pros and cons.

Here is a list of the various counterfeit money detectors and their advantages and disadvantages:

The simplest of all counterfeit money detectors is perhaps the humble magnifying glass. American currency notes feature special marks and symbols that are not visible to the naked eye; it is, at least in principle, possible for a trained expert to detect a counterfeit bill using a magnifying glass.

However, this method has some disadvantages: (i) It is not practical for the person at the cash counter to be looking at currency with a magnifying glass in front of the clients. It looks rather silly and is too embarrassing (on the part of the customers), and takes way too long. (ii) You need a specialist to do the job. (iii) Chances of a goof-up are high.

Ultraviolet light detector: The American currency is printed using ultraviolet inks. When genuine currency is checked with an ultraviolet counterfeit detector, it does not respond. But a fake currency printed using a color copier or a printer will produce an image. The ultraviolet light will also reveal tiny particles of the toner on the currency's surface. Some machines sound an alarm if they detect a fake note.

The drawbacks of these machines are: (i) Ultraviolet inks are available in the market and can be used by sophisticated crooks to get clearance by the ultraviolet detector. (ii) Ultraviolet tubes are very expensive and do not last long. (iii) A genuine currency can sometimes falsely show up as counterfeit.

Magnetic detectors: US currency notes have some magnetic components embedded in them. Magnetic detectors detect these magnetic components to ascertain if a banknote is genuine or fake. Normally, fakes will not carry these magnetic components because interleaving with such components is a complicated and sophisticated process not readily accessible to crooks.

But, on the other hand, magnetic inks are readily available in the market. So, if a clever forger uses a matching magnetic ink to print the counterfeit note, the magnetic detector could easily be fooled.

Counterfeit money detector pen: The US banknote is made of a material that is cotton-based, and not wood-based like the normal paper. This is the principle on which counterfeit detector pens are based. Their working is very simple: they make an iodine mark on the currency note, and if the note is a counterfeit one, the iodine reacts with the starch in the paper, leaving a black or a brown mark. If the currency note is genuine, then the pen leaves an amber-colored mark. These detectors are easy to use, very cheap, and can be used by untrained hands.

A drawback of this machine is that forgers can use sulfur-containing paper to avoid detection because this kind of paper will not react to iodine ink. Moreover, the pen wears out rapidly.

Infrared counterfeit detector: Like the other ink detectors, an infrared counterfeit detector detects the infrared inks present on US currency. And like other ink detectors, infrared detectors have the same drawback: that infrared inks are readily available in the market and sophisticated crooks can use them to their advantage.

Perhaps using different types of detectors in combination to check all types of components - ultraviolet, magnetic, infrared - can make counterfeit bill detection absolutely foolproof. Lastly, checking the currency note manually to look for the presence of the security thread running in it gives immediate and reliable verdict. However, this method is not practical if you are receiving cash payments on a large scale.
